The essay explains the details of the internal and external structure of the state. It also traces the very beginnings of the Papal States and the subsequent phases of both its inception and later history. The essay begins with the brief history of the foundation of the Vatican in the Roman times. It touches upon the theme of the name itself and discusses its etymology.
The subsequent chapters focus on the issue of the formation of the papacy after the death of Saint Peter, also called the Prince of the Apostles. The predecessor of the popes was one of the main figures among the apostles, with his sainthood stemming from numerous accounts of his life and the search for his remains after death. Currently, the Pope himself, elected by the papal conclave, is the sovereign ruler of the Catholic Church comprising the legislative, executive and judiciary power. Furthermore, the essay describes the dispute between the papacy and the Italian state, ending with the Lateran Treaty of 1929.
